Old Boys Joel Beaton (2019) and Sam Holt (2019)

For Sam Holt (2019) and Joel Beaton (2019) their journey together began at Churchie in Grenfell House, where through shared experiences they developed a friendship built on trust and a willingness to tackle challenges collaboratively. Those same qualities have carried through into their entrepreneurial journey, with a shared mission to not only change the way the world thinks about financial health but to also empower people to feel more confident and in control of their financial futures.

Sam has always believed that money should feel more personal, more motivating and far less overwhelming. With a background in business and technology, having seen how disconnected and uninspiring traditional finance had become, he set out to build something entirely different; something that will redefine the way a new generation experiences money. Joel, with his background in software engineering, has been able to bring this vision to life by creating a platform that helps people feel more confident, more in control and more optimistic about their financial future.

As the founders of Wingman, an innovative financial wellbeing app, their exciting new venture is the world’s first AI-powered financial health coach and the world’s first gamified money app. Built for a generation (i.e. Gen Z) facing rising living costs and financial anxiety, Wingman replaces traditional banking tools by combining behavioural psychology, gamification and AI to encourage better money habits through small, consistent actions rather than guilt-driven budgeting.

With engagement and feedback loops comparable to those of successful health, fitness and language learning consumer apps (Whoop, Strava, Duolingo etc), the personalised financial health scoring, spending insights, goal tracking and conversational coaching makes managing money more engaging, rewarding and accessible. To stay motivated and have fun, users can even create or join groups with friends where they can share savings goals (without sharing their personal balances), compare financial health scores and compete on leaderboards.

Using the data authorised and shared by users, they simply provide insights and tracking tools to enable their users to build healthy financial habits and gain the confidence to make informed decisions. With industry-standard encryption technologies, Wingman deploys state of the art security measures, meaning that internet banking credentials (including usernames or passwords) are not stored and transactions cannot be processed.

Sam and Joel say that financial wellbeing is about far more than budgets and bank balances. Wingman is about reducing financial stress and giving people the confidence to achieve their financial goals, be it individually or collectively.
