Class of 2014

After finishing at Churchie, Old Boy Harrison Mallan (2014) was accepted into biomedical science at Griffith, with plans to move into radiology and eventually medicine. However as a tech enthusiast, he could see AI heading toward a point where radiology had the potential to be replaced by a computer. Furthermore, he became convinced the world would continue electrifying and that skilled electricians would be in strong demand.

Harrison completed an electrical apprenticeship over four years and then moved to Tasmania to take up a job maintaining wind farms across the state. Two years later, he became eligible for his contractor’s licence and started his own business. However, the passing of his father prompted a year-long sabbatical spent living in London, Lyon and Gothenburg. During that time, coinciding with the release of ChatGPT 3.5, the idea for Standards Mate first emerged. Built from the ground up, it’s an agentic AI platform designed to help tradies and professionals navigate compliance with confidence. The initial prototype was rough, little more than a proof of concept, but it showed clear potential. Alongside it, Procurement Mate tackles a familiar frustration by helping users find the right product the first time without endless calls to suppliers. As the software developed, Harrison found it quietly shaping how he made decisions in his own business day-to-day.

On his return to Australia, inspired by memories of looking at properties with his dad and close friend Andrew Moreland, it was when Harrison purchased a development site in Toowong that things began to align. HEM Developments is a joint venture with cousin and fellow Old Boy Edward Mallan (2009) which focuses on delivering quality focused on small to medium residential, commercial and industrial projects. For Harrison and Edward, business is about more than outcomes; it’s about doing things properly, backing their judgment and treating people fairly. Their nine-unit development in Toowong has just come onto the market.

Alongside this, Mallcorp is Harrison’s his Brisbane‑based electrical contracting company specialising in commercial maintenance and larger‑scale residential work.  Mallcorp is also the parent company of Standards Mate, bringing together his experience across construction and technology.
