Class of 1979

Richard Johnston (1979) was a member of the Cricket First XI for Churchie in 1977, 1978 and 1979. He played representative cricket for Queensland from U12 through to U19, later playing QCA “A” Grade Cricket in Brisbane for Valleys and Wests. Whilst always maintaining his passion for cricket, in the mid 80’s Richard retired from playing the game to pursue a career in Aviation. Around 20 years later he returned to studying Dentistry, graduating at the age of 45 as a Dental Surgeon.

After a game hiatus of over 30 years, Richard commenced playing cricket again 3 years ago and has now been selected as a left arm orthodox bowler and batsman in Australia’s team to play in the inaugural Over 60’s Cricket World Cup. The tournament is to be held on the Sunshine Coast from Friday 2 to Thursday 15 September 2022 and will feature over 300 players across 12 teams from the World's cricketing nations, including a “Rest of the World” team.

Richard remembers many hours playing cricket in the back yard as a kid being trained and coached by his father Stuart, another Old Boy. Stuart is enjoying life at the age of 89 still playing golf, after a very successful career as a Medical Practitioner.

Congratulations Richard! We wish you and the team every success.
