Class of 2012

In 2008, Old Boy Jack Poplawski (2012) came to Churchie from St George in western Queensland to board in Gerald House. During the second term of his senior year, Jack completed a Trial Instructional Flight with V2 Helicopters, based at Archerfield. Having grown up on the land, his deep-rooted passion for agriculture and aviation naturally led him to pursue a Commercial Helicopter Licence, with his crosshairs set on becoming an aerial mustering pilot.

After a period of mustering in Far North Queensland, Jack was offered a seat with Fortescue Helicopters, based in Newman, Western Australia. At just 21, he launched his side venture, Whirlybird Photography, capturing and showcasing his unique experiences as a helicopter pilot in the most remote regions of Australia. His work as an aerial mustering pilot has taken him to some of the country’s most isolated corners, offering stunning landscapes and incredible fishing spots, including the opportunity to catch some of the largest barramundi.

In a span of seven years, Fortescue Helicopters has seen remarkable growth, expanding from a fleet of six helicopters and pilots to 22 helicopters and 25 pilots, while also introducing larger turbine helicopters to their operations. By 2022, Jack was appointed Chief Pilot, a role that involves managing day-to-day operations, conducting in-house check flights, and providing emergency training for all pilots every six months—all while maintaining a full-time flying schedule.

For Jack, the most rewarding aspect of his job is the variety. One day might involve mustering cattle, and the next could see him slinging equipment to remote locations, collaborating with indigenous teams, managing feral animal populations, conducting surveys for iron ore mines, handling marine and drill rig transfers or aerial spraying — the possibilities are endless.

From February to December, it’s not uncommon for Jack to be away flying for two straight months, with only brief stops at home in Broome, located on the pristine waters of Cable Beach in The Kimberleys. Despite the long stretches away from home and the demanding nature of the job, Jack thrives in the dynamic and adventurous lifestyle that comes with being a helicopter pilot in remote Australia. His journey from a young, aspiring pilot to a Chief Pilot and business owner showcases not only his dedication but also his love for the land and aviation. Jack’s passion for flying and his commitment to the outback’s agricultural communities continue to fuel his success, making every challenge an opportunity to grow and experience the beauty and vastness of remote Australia.
