Linda Laube was deeply involved in all aspects of Churchie life from 2008 to 2019. Whilst sons Nicholas and James were at school, she coordinated the yearly Prep School cocktail parties, served on the Parents’ Committee, volunteered in the rowing and volleyball canteens, the tuckshop, and many other events. Even after the boys graduated, Linda remained active with the Past Mothers’ Association, helping to coordinate events. With her constant presence on Oaklands Parade, she was so well known among staff and parents.

In 2019, Linda was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. For years leading up to her diagnosis, she demonstrated multiple signs of Ovarian Cancer that was unbeknownst to her and everyone around her. On Boxing Day 2023, after a 5 year battle, Linda passed away. The entire family soon came to realise just how little public awareness there is aware of gynaecological cancer. With the view that this lack of awareness is entirely preventable, they have now partnered with the Cherish Foundation to create the inaugural Linda’s Long Lunch as a meaningful way to honour her memory. The goal of this charity event is to raise much needed awareness and funding of kinder treatments for women and girls with gynaecological cancers.

“Every day, 18 women are diagnosed with gynaecological cancer, six will not survive.”

James says: “We found out about Mum’s diagnosis of stage 3C ovarian cancer during my senior year at Churchie. During that incredibly tough time, the Churchie community truly supported us. We were so fortunate to have had such a strong support system. Many Churchie families brought us meals, staff continually checked on us and the boys helped me finish my senior year. This invaluable contribution from the Churchie community has played a massive role in inspiring my family and me to create Linda’s Long Lunch, a charity event that will ensure that more Brisbane families can receive this same level of support.

Churchie’s commitment to community service has taught to me to help those in need and was one of the main reasons for Mum and Dad enrolled Nicholas and myself. In the motto Making of Men, Mum admired the goal of a well-rounded young man, so it only feels right that even after graduating that we continue that goal, with our father Dale and sister Maddison, but now for a cause close at heart.”

While the event has sold out, if you would like to donate to Linda’s Long Lunch event please click here, or if you would like to sponsor or donate an item for the silent auction please email James via the OBA office at oba@churchie.com.au 100% of donations contribute to finding causes, prevention and gentler treatment options for future generations to come.
