Class of 1991

It would be fair to say that Old Boy David Sinclair (1991) is living the life many of us only dream about. Having graduated in 1996 from the University of Queensland in Science/Law, it was in 2005 when David skied across Greenland that he fell in love with the polar regions. In 2007 he returned to ski tour in Greenland (climbing the highest mountains north of the Arctic Circle) and guide in Svalbard. Whilst continuing to practice law in Melbourne in house for a range of listed companies, David worked in a range of roles on expedition ships in the polar regions, including as expedition leader. His guiding work has taken him to Iceland, Greenland, Svalbard, Canadian High Arctic, Jan Mayen, South Georgia, the Ross Sea, Mawson’s Huts, the New Zealand sub-Antarctic islands, Macquarie Island, the Antarctic Peninsula, Falkland Islands and the Kimberley.

If that is not enough, David is also a semi-professional photographer and works the occasional gig, including as photographer for the Australian test Cricket Tour of India in 2008.

Following a false start, interrupted by COVID, in 2022 David founded Islands & Ice Travel running trips in Antarctica, the Arctic, Tonga (swimming with humpbacks), Hinchinbrook Island and Iceland (aurora, ice cave and winter photography) with plans to expand the tours on offer. In late October he’ll be flying into Antarctica from South Africa to investigate options for some truly unique adventures.

Hobart is now home, where David is enjoying raising his two daughters. All whilst being close to the Southern Ocean, the albatross, whales, seals and Tasmanian wilderness. A range of images from polar regions and beyond can be seen on his website David Sinclair Images. David won the Polar Category of the biennial Frank Hurley Photography Awards in 2020. You can also follow David on Instagram at @davidsinclairphoto or @islandsandicetravel.

David is interested in setting up a voyage to Antarctica for Churchie Old Boys, students and families. If you are interested in a voyage to explore and experience the incredible wildlife and landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula, please click here to email the Churchie OBA office.
