Class of 2019 |
Old Boy Cooper Whitting (2019), pictured, is a 2023 recipient of the Churchie Foundation ‘Overseas Study Scholarship for Old Boys’. He recently attended the University of Leeds and has penned the following recollections of his experience.
In mid-2023, I packed my bags and left home for the first time—not just to move out, but to move to the other side of the world. Thanks to the Churchie Foundation Overseas Study Scholarship, I spent six months at the University of Leeds, navigating a completely new way of life. I had never been to Europe before, let alone lived overseas, so everything felt unfamiliar—the culture, the cold, and the independence. Walking through Leeds on my first day, I felt both excitement and uncertainty. But that was exactly what I wanted—a challenge that would push me out of my comfort zone.
Back home, I studied Construction Management, but being on exchange gave me the chance to explore something new. I completed a minor in Business, and the way classes were structured was different from what I was used to. There was more independent learning, discussion-based lessons, and a strong focus on global perspectives. It was a refreshing change that broadened my understanding of business and how it connects the world around us. Beyond academics, Leeds was an incredible place to live. The student culture was vibrant, with countless clubs, societies, and events to get involved in. Whether it was live music, social nights, or simply exploring the city, there was always something happening.
One of the most valuable parts of my exchange was the people I met. I made great friends from all over the world, each with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We bonded over shared adventures, adjusting to a new country together, and the occasional struggle of navigating daily life in a foreign place. Whether it was exploring Leeds, traveling across Europe, or just hanging out in our student flats, those friendships became the foundation of my experience. It’s those connections that made every moment more meaningful, and I know they will last far beyond my time abroad.
Adapting to the cold was one of the biggest adjustments. I had travelled to winter destinations before, but living in freezing temperatures, walking to class in the snow, and dealing with the short daylight hours was a whole new experience. It took time to get used to, but it became part of the adventure. Another major highlight was traveling. Leeds’ central location made it easy to explore, and I took every opportunity to do so. I visited Belgium, Austria, Germany, and more. I was able to experience new cultures, try different foods, and discover places I had only seen in pictures.
This scholarship didn’t just help fund my exchange—it made the entire experience possible. It allowed me to say yes to new opportunities, travel more, and fully embrace life overseas. Studying abroad was more than just an academic opportunity; it was a chance to grow, gain independence, and experience things I wouldn’t be able to back home. For any Old Boys considering it, my advice is simple: apply. You’ll return with new skills, lifelong friendships, and experiences that will shape you in ways you never expected.
This year Churchie Foundation is again awarding the Overseas Study Scholarships for Old Boys. Applications are now invited from Old Boys and current Year 12 students wishing to attend colleges or universities in the UK or USA. The application process will close on Friday 31 May.
