Old Boy John Flower attended Churchie from 1974 to 1982. Born with two medical conditions, spina bifida (in English – split spine) and hydrocephalus (in English – water on the brain), it is believed that he was one of the first students with a disability to attend Churchie. Whilst at Churchie, John represented Queensland in swimming at the inaugural Pacific School Games (1982). He went on to represent Queensland (through the Sporting Wheelies) a further two times.
After leaving school John worked for Conrad and Gargett, who have been the architects of many of the school’s buildings. As a mature-aged student, he undertook a Diploma of Teaching (Primary) in the hope of one day teaching at Churchie. Unfortunately, a career as a teacher wasn’t to be. John has worked in the Queensland Public Service since 1989.
As a member of the Board of Directors of SBH (Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus) Queensland for 30 years, John has held the positions of Board Member, Secretary, Vice-President and President. His personal interests are service delivery, fundraising and marketing, as well as raising awareness of the conditions and SBH Queensland.
John enjoys being involved in SBH Queensland because of the importance the organisation has on the lives of people born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
To help raise much-needed funds for children and adults with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, John extends an invitation to Old Boys and indeed the whole Churchie community to participate in the annual 2018 SSKB Wheel & Walk Fun Run. The Churchie P&F Executive Committee are already on board and will be participating. The event is to be held on Sunday 29th July 2018, from 8.30 am – 12 noon at Captain Burke Park, Kangaroo Point. With a goal of having 650 people participating, there will be plenty of fun to be had, including sports and relaxation massages, live entertainment, family activities, food and beverages (including coffee)!
